"Software engineering" is not just one job. It's a family of jobs spanning everying from QA to system architecture, from owning outcomes to building to specs. We analyzed the 13 software and tech careers tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and their career prospects in the face of AI range from Risky to Strong .
The Field Is Splitting in Two
AI is not impacting the software industry evenly - it is impacting the junior, execution roles first. The BLS projects computer programmer (junior software developer) employment to fall 6% through 2034, one of the few tech occupations with negative growth. In that same period, software developer (senior level) jobs are projected to grow 16%, with 115,200 annual job openings.
Job postings data analyzed by the Financial Times reinforces BLS projections. Junior developer postings (0–2 years of experience) dropped 78% from their April 2022 peak. Senior postings (6+ years) fell by about half but have since partially recovered.[3]

13 Software Roles, Ranked by AI Resilience
Here is where each career in the software and technology cluster lands on our AI-Proof Ranking. The score has two components: an AI driver and a labor market component. The AI driver aggregates 12 expert-sourced attributes across exposure, necessity, and elasticity, scored using OpenAI's AI Jobs Transition Framework. The labor market component is based on BLS employment projections.
| Role | AI-Proof Tier | Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Information Security Engineer | Strong | +7% |
| Data Scientist | Strong | +34% |
| Computer Science Researcher | Strong | +20% |
| Information Security Analyst | Strong | +28% |
| Software Developer | Strong | +16% |
| Web Designer | Solid | +7% |
| Computer Systems Architect | Solid | +8% |
| Database Architect | Solid | +9% |
| IT Project Manager | Shifting | +8% |

Software & Tech Industry Overview →What Makes a Role Resilient
The resilient roles share three traits. Each is work AI can help with but cannot take over: ownership, judgment, and accountability.
1. Ownership
Software developers own the outcome. They confer on system design and direct the testing that decides whether the work ships - the tasks in the table with no AI footprint. Computer programmers execute a written spec, which is the part AI does well. Stack Overflow's Developer Survey 2025 shows why ownership holds up: 84% of developers now use or plan to use AI tools, up from 76% a year earlier, yet only 3.1% highly trust what those tools produce, and 66% regularly hit code that is "almost right, but not quite."[4] Someone still has to catch the "not quite."

2. Judgment
Judgment is deciding well when there's no clear answer. A computer science researcher applies theory to technology that does not exist yet. A security engineer assesses controls against threats no training set has seen. These judgment tasks have no observed AI usage in the Anthropic data.[2]

3. Accountability
Accountability is having your name on the outcome. An IT project manager owns the budget, schedule, and scope. A security engineer oversees the risk assessments that keep an organization out of legal trouble. When these go wrong, a person answers for it - not a tool. That is why these tasks show no AI footprint while routine reporting and plan drafting do. The BLS also project these jobs will see higher than average growth through 2034.[1]

Software & Tech Industry Overview →What to Do With This, Depending on Where You Are
If you’re currently a programmer or junior developer
Try to lean into areas where you have an advantage. For example, everyone is learning AI tools, but early-career developers adopt them faster than anyone.
“55.5% of developers with 1–5 years of experience use AI tools daily, the highest rate of any experience level.”
Stack Overflow, 2025 Developer Survey[4]
But using the tools faster is not the goal. The developers who go further - who build and deploy AI systems - are turning that skill into entirely new roles. For a programmer, AI Integration Engineer is the closest step: your coding and systems-thinking transfer directly.
“Job postings requiring generative AI skills grew by over 1,000% between 2022 and 2024, with AI integration and deployment roles among the fastest-growing technical positions.”
LinkedIn Economic Graph, Future of Work Report[5]
So learn the AI-native skills - everyone is - then go further. Build the deployment and integration experience that turns into a role, and move toward the work the task data shows AI augments rather than automates: requirements analysis, system design, and client-facing decisions.
If you’re choosing where to enter the field
The entry-level coding funnel has narrowed, but new graduates are not shut out. The bar moved: employers want AI fluency and the fundamentals that only come from real practice - debugging, testing, and reasoning about a system when the AI is wrong.
“Junior developers who show up already fluent in AI-assisted workflows but who can also debug, test, and reason about systems without AI are the ones getting hired - the bar hasn’t lowered, it’s shifted.”
Stack Overflow Blog, “AI vs Gen Z” (Dec 2025)[6]
So get real reps early - internships, open source, anything where you own a system end to end rather than just generating snippets. Then weigh entry paths with accountability built in from day one. Security is a strong one: the on-ramp itself now rewards AI skills.
“More than half of job postings for entry-level cybersecurity roles now reference AI competencies: using large language models, evaluating AI outputs, automating tasks, and understanding AI-powered threats - not just traditional network security fundamentals.”
CompTIA, State of Cybersecurity 2025[7]
Security, IT project coordination, and data science all start with more accountability than a pure coding role - and the data shows stronger growth and competitive pay across all three.
Adjacent Pivots Worth Considering
The BLS list is not the whole picture. The fastest-growing software roles do not appear in it yet - hybrid positions that layer AI, security, or infrastructure on top of a coding foundation. They show up in job postings now, and tend to pay at senior levels.
AI Integration Engineer
Connects LLMs and AI APIs into existing enterprise systems, owning reliability, security, and scale.

The Bottom Line
Software engineering as a field is not disappearing. It is concentrating. The total number of software developer jobs is growing. What is shrinking is the execution tier - the entry point that gave a generation of developers their start. That path is narrower now, and the data suggests it will keep narrowing.
The roles that are growing share one property: someone’s name is attached to the outcome, and that person must own whatever AI gets wrong. If your role has that property, you are well-positioned. If it doesn’t, the table above shows you where to move.
